Elver Eel Fishermen

FT Weekend Magazine

This story documents the Eel Fisherman of Gloucester, as they scouts the water for signs of elver eels on the high tide banks of the River Severn, in England, UK. Glass Elver Eels are young eels with transparent skin and around 5-8cm in length. They spawn in the Atlantic, and enter specific estuaries as glass eels, swimming upstream to live in fresh water during their juvenile growth phase. With a higher price per pound that caviar, they are caught and cooked as a delicacy in the UK and Europe.
